Let’s continue with our exploration of the western shore of Lake Como: today we bring you to Sala Comacina, a lovely fishermen village between Ossuccio and Colonno on the west coast of Lake Como, with only 600 inhabitants!

Sala Comacina boasts an incredibly lucky position as it overlooks the stunning scenery of Isola Comacina, the only one island of Lake Como.

This timeless village - located at the foot of Monte Costone, at just 20 mins from Como - is made of a handful of colorful fishermen houses that overlook an inlet called “the oil hollow” (“Zoca de l’oli”), due to the calmness of the water, similar to oil, and the massive presence of olive trees.

The old part of the village - with its old stone portals, little bridges, romantic balconies, charming stone facades and humble townhouses - lies between the church of San Bartolomeo and the lake. Be prepared to find plenty of beautiful narrow alleys, like in the majority of the lakeside hamlets of Lake Como! You can’t get lost: there’s the sound of the water that will always lead you to the lake.

You can enjoy all this beauty during the famous Greenway trail: Sala is its second step if you start from Colonno!

if you walk along these steep streets you will reach the promontory called “La Puncia”. Here you will see the spectacular Villa Rachele Beccaria, the 18th century residence of the Marquises Beccaria Bonesana which over time has hosted many of the characters who have written the history of Italian culture, starting with Cesare Beccaria, author of the famous treatise “Dei Delitti e delle Pene” (1764).

The harbour area of Sala Comacina is by far one of the prettiest of Lake Como, and deserves a long wander (and minimum 45 selfies) when you’re there.

You can easily organize a boat trip to Isola Comacina from the harbour. The island is best known for its use in various movies but also has a much more ancient history since Roman times.

If you want to have a refined lunch or dinner in a breathtaking location in Sala Comacina, don’t miss Locanda La Tirlindana: we confess, here at Lakeside we have a real crush for it! You can sit right in front of the Island, enjoying an incredible scenery with your glass of wine in the hand. Not bad at all!
