5 Spectacular Locations To Enjoy The Foliage Magic at Lake Como and Surroundings

We’ll never stop saying it: autumn is truly the most magical time to visit Lake Como in Italy.

We’re not just talking about house hunting (which in those months, as you may know if you’re familiar with Lake Como property market, is particularly lively) but also about wellbeing tout court: the climate is mild, the coasts they are less crowded, the warm colors creating a fairytale vibe, and nature offering many wonderful products like mushrooms and chestnuts to brighten up our cuisine.

November, then, is a special month: it’s in fact here that the foliage - that almost mystical phenomenon for which everything is tinged with yellow, red and orange - explodes in its chromatic kaleidoscope. Stopping to observe it is a precious moment of connection with nature that everyone deserves to have.

If you’re lovers of this particular period of the year like we are, you’re in the right place: we’ve selected for you 5 crazy locations in the area where you can go wild photographing the poetry of the foliage between the lake and the mountains. Get ready though, because November is coming to an end!

#1 Nesso: Civera bridge

This is by far one of the most instagrammable corners of Lake Como: we’re talking about the Civera bridge (Nesso), which in autumn is surrounded by the coppery foliage of the charming period houses around it. A true painting from another era!

Talented photographer Luca Lari has been able to capture all the poetry of that place with the amazing pic above, which we particularly love for its delicate aesthetic. We suggest to have a look at his great works on his Facebook and Instagram pages if you want to be amazed by the stunning scenarios of Lake Como!

Fun fact about Civera: the bridge also appears in Alfred Hitchcock's movie The Pleasure Garden (1925).

#2 The lakefront of Sorico

Even the walk along the lake in Sorico offers great emotions in autumn, with its explosion of red hues. The long beaches of Sorico and the related cycle/pedestrian promenade that connects it to the nearby towns of Gera Lario and Domaso are undoubtedly the best observation point to be amazed in front of the foliage!

#3 Pescarenico

Moving on to the Lecco branch, we can’t help but mentioning Pescarenico, an ancient fishing village that still retains the charm of the past: the alleys wind around the central Piazza Era, and along Adda river you can still see the boats coloring the shore. Walking through Pescarenico really means savoring the scents of an ancient time.

With the foliage, a myriad of warm colors are reflected on the waters that bathe the shore of the village: pure melancholy.

#4 Valle Intelvi: Casasco, Alpe Grande, Pian delle Alpi, Lanzo, Sentiero Espressioni

Valle Intelvi - one of the mountain areas around the lake we love most - offers huge satisfaction in autumn: it’s difficult to select a better point than another to admire the spectacle of the multicolored woods in fall. If we really had to choose, however, we’d recommend these spots:

  • Sentiero delle Espressioni in Schignano is an enchanted forest where you can get lost among wooden sculptures carved into the trees, views of the lake and huge chestnut trees;

  • The beech forest on Monte Generoso;

  • The walk from Casasco to the slopes of Monte S. Zeno;

  • The path towards Alpe Grande in S. Fedele Intelvi;

  • The marvelous beech woods of Lanzo, near the Locanda del Notaio and Pian delle Alpi.

Tip: dive into the magical shots of Maurizio Moro and Valerio Carletto, two photographers from the valley that we greatly admire. Few like them know, with their expertise and their strong love for the region, how to tell the magic of Valle Intelvi

#5 Forest of the baths of Masino in Valtellina

You know those magnificent books of Nordic fairy tales with stories set in forests full of goblins? Well, the Forest of Masino baths (“Bagni di Masino”) seems to come out of a similar book!

You’ll find large boulders covered with soft moss, a tongue of asphalt that runs along it, large carpets of leaves and birch and pine trees. Definitely the perfect place to take memorable shots with your family or friends surrounded by the warm hug of Mr Fall!
